Ted: The Coach Returns to the Game

Ted, a teacher and football coach in the Santa Ana School District, was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital after experiencing a Cerebral Vascular accident. After his stroke, numerous complications developed. A tracheotomy was performed and Ted was on a ventilator due to induced coma. He had surgical wounds that weren’t healing correctly and partial hemi paresis, weakness on one side of the body, which made it doubtful that he could walk again.

In June Ted was admitted to Kindred Hospital Westminster for continued care.

Upon admission he had stage four wounds, was completely immobile and on IV feedings. Because of his immobility and obesity, Ted was at high risk for infection. Kindred’s interdisciplinary of doctors, nurses, therapists and specialists evaluated his condition and began an intensive treatment plan tailored to Ted’s complex medical needs.

Respiratory therapists placed Ted on a weaning protocol and weaned him from the ventilator. Wound care specialists managed his wounds aggressively and they were resolved with complete healing. Rehabilitation therapists worked to help Ted become as mobile as possible and prepare him for inpatient rehabilitation.

In October, Ted left Kindred Hospital Westminster standing with a front wheel walker, able to ambulate 15 feet. He was transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility for continued rehabilitation.

Ted has since returned to teaching and coaching football for the Santa Ana School District.

“Without Kindred Hospital Westminster he would have never recovered,” says his wife.

Kindred Hospital Westminster’s success is apparent in stories like this as well as in our quality scores – our patients and families rate our quality of care at over 93 percent and 96.8 percent would recommend Kindred.
